STOCKTON - John C. Schick, a respected criminal defense attorney and beloved law professor at Humphreys College Laurence Drivon School of Law, died unexpectedly at home of apparent natural causes. He was 65.
Patrick Piggott, dean of the law school, said colleagues and students became concerned Tuesday when he didn't show up for classes. Two students went to his home and found him, Piggott said, adding that Schick appeared to have died in his sleep.
Schick had represented several high-profile defendants, including Fernando Belmontes, 50, who remains on California's death row for a 1981 murder.
In recent years, Schick left his practice to teach full time at Humphreys, where he had taught part time since 1972, making him the school's longest running professor, Piggott said.
He will be dearly missed, said Grey Galluzi, a 27-year-old student. She said his love of the law was contagious. He tirelessly encouraged students, she said.
