THE big day’s nearly here and Christmas tunes are ringing out across Teesside. But what makes a great Christmas pop song?
PRS for Music, which collects royalties on behalf of its 85,000 song writing and composer members, has unveiled Britain’s Top 15 Christmas songs - the festive favourites used most across the UK over the past 12 months.
Data from shops, radio airplay, television, international performance and live music over the past year has established the songs played and performed the most.
And topping the chart - perhaps surprisingly - is Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town, made famous by the Jackson 5 in 1970.
Coming a close second is Wizzard’s 1973 classic I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, with Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody a close third. And that doesn’t surprise North Yorkshire musician Alistair Griffin, who plays the Wizzard and Slade numbers in his festive set.
He said: “They go down really well, although my personal favourite is A Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl because it tells a good story.
