Foreclosure crisis hits families, neighborhoods, towns

The Harrisburg region has dodged the hardest blows of the national foreclosure crisis. But we’ve certainly been bruised.
Nearly 14,000 Harrisburg-area property owners have lost their homes to foreclosure since 2008. The foreclosures involve all neighborhoods, from downtown Harrisburg to suburban golf course developments. And the impacts extend far beyond foreclosed property owners.
Nationally, about 8 percent of homeowners are delinquent, not counting people already in foreclosure. In the Harrisburg region, less than 7 percent of homeowners are delinquent, according to Lender Processing Services. Stockton, Calif., where one in every 143 homes received a foreclosure notice in October, recently took over the national lead in foreclosures. The local foreclosure leader is Dauphin County, where one in every 706 homes received a foreclosure notice in September.
