All phone service was disrupted for much of Monday in far West Texas after a fiber-optic line just south of Monahans was severed.
AT&T spokeswoman Carrie Corey said a contractor accidentally cut an underground fiber optic line, cutting service in the provider’s West Central Texas district. That left callers to Fort Stockton, Alpine, Fort Davis, Marfa and other places getting a persistent busy signal.
People in Terlingua in the Big Bend told the Odessa American their landline phones had been fine but cell service was knocked out.
MIDLAND
Nearly 1,000 homes and businesses in Midland were without power for hours Monday night after a two-car collision sent one of the vehicles into a utility line.
The line broke in at least three places and a shopping mall was among the places left in the dark.
Police were investigating the wreck, which they said occurred when one car leaving the mall collided with another on a street. Tasa Watts, a Midland public information officer, told the Midland Reporter-Telegram one vehicle flipped, clipping the power line and skidding through an alley.
