Is Stockton Ready For A Name Change?

STOCKTON, Calif. (KCRA) -- A campaign on Facebook is looking to change Stockton's name, and thus, give the city a better image.

Among the suggestions on 'Rename Stockton' are Hugtown, Port City and even North Modesto, albeit the last one, it admits, is a stretch.

However, residents who spoke with KCRA 3 said changing the city's name won't solve the ills -- which include a record homicide count, high home foreclosures and a listing in Forbes magazine as the country's Most Miserable City.

Nonetheless, many residents say they are satisfied with Stockton as a name and home.

Mayor Ann Johnston said Hugtown was just too touchy-feely; Stockton is a solid name that denotes the strength of the people who live here, she added.

However, leading community organizer Andy Prokop said he would choose the name Abundance in honor of the area's agricultural produce, and the caring people in the city.

The city was named for the naval war hero Commodore Stockton
