Baldwin's Bicentennial Park projects continue

BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- Bicentennial Park could have the first building of a 19th-century village complete by next summer as work on a blacksmith shop continues, according to Archives Director John Jackson.
Jackson told commissioners this week that the park, located on a 367-acre tract on Ala. 225 about 2 miles south of Stockton and 2 miles north of Interstate 65, had seen more than 500 weekend visitors since expanding hours this fall. Commissioners gave Jackson approval to launch a memorial brick program for the park that will allow residents to have a name engraved on a brick paver for $40.
The pavers will be part of a 1,200-square-foot image of Baldwin County and an area around memorials honoring veterans.
The director outlined work on several other projects, including a move to establish the Tensaw Parkway Scenic Byway, a route extending from Battleship Park on the Causeway to the Monroe County line on Ala. 59. The drive would link potential tourism sites like Five Rivers Delta Resource Center, Historic Blakeley State Park, Saluda Hill Cemetery/Alabama State Veteran’s Cemetery, Bicentennial Park, Fort Mims and William "Red Eagle" Weatherford’s grave site.
