Students treated to real-life FarmVille
STOCKTON - Students at Rio Calaveras Elementary School were treated Wednesday to an educational experience delivered by a truck that pulled up, bringing with it a plant nutrient classroom on wheels.
The event was courtesy of the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom. The foundation's Seed Survivor Mobile provided the students with interactive learning experiences that taught the children about growing healthy plants and where their food comes from.
The students learned why plants need water, light, healthy soil and nutrients to survive, and they planted sunflower seeds that they were able to take home to grow. They also played multimedia and virtual reality video games related to the subject matter.
"We are excited to educate elementary-aged students about plants, what they need to grow, and how they contribute to a nutritious lifestyle," said the foundation's executive director, Judy Culbertson. "This experience will help connect students to their food source and is as important as anything else they are learning in the classroom."
"They've seen homes through live-streaming virtual tours, through online photography, through my website. Literally, they had never seen the property themselves, though they had a friend, a local person, come to see it, and then they bought it.
