A CARE manager from Stockton is in the running for a national care award after winning the North-east heat of the Great British Care Awards.
Zoe Newbury, home care manager for the Stockton branch of Direct Health, will now head to the national finals next year.
Zoe was shortlisted after being nominated by her staff, but while pleased with her success, she is more proud of five of her staff who also made it to the regional finals - including one who had only worked in care for 18 weeks.
Susan Gentles, 51, of Stockton, was in the running for the Healthcare Newcomer award after being nominated by 95-year-old Helen Dobson, of Fairfield.
Making her nomination, Helen explained how she has been completely deaf for 70 years, cannot use a hearing aid and had to teach herself to lip read.
She said: “I nominate Susan as she speaks so clear to me and faces me. She is a very pleasant lady and always arrives on time.”
The six all attended a glitzy ceremony with champagne reception at Newcastle’s Hilton Hotel last month, presented by comedian Hardeep Singh.
