Local athletes spread holiday cheer
STOCKTON - Tyronne Gross Jr. and some of his friends have spread the gift of giving this holiday season.
Gross, the former standout running back at Lincoln High who played for the San Diego Chargers, treated about 25 area kids to a shopping spree unlike any they ever had experienced. Gross, through donations and his Tyronne Gross Jr. Foundation, gave each child a $100 gift card to Target on Trinity Parkway in Stockton. The aim was for each child to buy at least one gift that would be donated to the Stockton Children's Home. They could spend the balance on gifts for themselves and their families.
Last week, the kids, who were selected from area church and youth groups, assembled at Casa Flores restaurant in the Marina Marketplace in Stockton, where its owner, Octavio Cruces, treated them to breakfast. Gross and an impressive group of athletes, including Stagg High graduate and Oakland Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden, former Franklin High football standout Tim Brown, Edison graduate and former New Orleans Saints running back Lynell Hamilton, Oakland native and former NFL running back Quinton Ganther, Arena Football League quarterback Aaron Garcia and former San Francisco 49ers kick returner Otis Amey, spoke to the kids and escorted them on their shopping spree. Gross held a similar event some days later in Elk Grove.
