211 happy returns for Summerville women
TWO residents at a Stockton Heath care home will have more reason than most to celebrate this Christmas.
Vera Kelly and Phylis Wittle have clocked up 211 years between them!
Mrs Whittle celebrated her 105th birthday on November 27 at Summerville Care Home.
She had a party with a visiting entertainer who sang old and new songs.
Mrs Whittle was a French teacher who taught in various secondary schools.
After reading French and maths at Manchester University in the 1920s she spent a year in Paris at the University of the Sorbonne. Her birthday cake was inscribed ‘Bonne Anniversaire, Phyllis – 105 ans’!
Mrs Whittle’s late husband, Ron, was formerly chief buyer at Crosfields. Although the couple both came from Warrington they had first met him in St Malo, Brittany.
Mrs Whittle has one son, Martin, two grandchildren, Mark and Sarah, a nephew and a niece, and is also a great aunt to four and great-great aunt to seven.
Mrs Whittle loves to read, takes an interest in the activities at Summerville enjoys sitting in the garden in the summer. For many years she was involved with the MS Society and retired as secretary when she was 90.
